Cleopatra Music Video

July 6, 2016

We’ve just released the music video for “Cleopatra.” Watch it here. A note from Wesley on the video:

“Cleopatra made me cry in the studio and I had to stop the take. It’s inspired by a true story about a female taxi driver who, when she was younger, was proposed to. But her father had just passed away, so she didn’t give her boyfriend an answer. So he left the village broken-hearted and rejected and never returned again. He was her great love and she wouldn’t wash the footprints off the floor after he had left.

I knew immediately that I wanted to write a song about the story because it was so haunting and poetic. And I got to meet the lady herself eventually and she was very honest and humble. She really affected me because of the sadness in her story. In today’s world, we are just inundated with images of grandness and how great everyone’s life is. And it’s not true. In fact, it’s depressing. This was a real and honest story.”

It is rare that I listen to a song the first time through and instantly fall in love with it. “Cleopatra” is such a song. I get chills listening to it and can see it being a great classic, along with the rest of the album, thirty to forty years from now. An amazing contribution in a sea of great music coming out these days- it stands out above all the rest. Thank you for this auditory feast!

Thank you for sharing the story! I’ve listened to “Cleopatra” so many times and wondered where this song came from because it is such a great song. Like Jen commented above I get chills when I listen to it. Love the video, love the whole album and and loved, loved your concert in Milwaukee.

I taught English for 13 years, and had the song “Cleopatra” been released then, we would have studied it as poetry. Loved your turn of a phrase and slant rhyme. The message is beautiful and haunting. I loved from the first time I heard it by accident on WYEP in Pittsburgh. Can’t thank you enough.

Great music video! The second riders whom the taxi cab driver picked up were a mother and her daughter; was this the same mother/daughter couple from the music video “Stubborn Love?” Thank you for creating this wonderful song and video to go with it!

“Cleopatra” is a wonderful song along with the many other great songs the Lumineers have created. It’s so amazing to have talented musicians such as the Lumineers that sing songs that have true meaning. One truly great and influential band

You must tell us the name of the wonderful actress who’s behind the wheel of this taxi. Terrific song with an equally wonderful video – and backstory.

  11. This video made me cry and it touched me in so many ways. Life is not perfect, Life is sad most of the time, Life happens, but you must go forward. I purchased your CD today because of this video. Thanks for sharing as I am sure it was a difficult video to create, but so inspiring and touching, just like your music.

  12. I love, love, LOVE ‘Cleopatra’ and love it even more knowing the backstory! Will listen to it now with a new outlook.

My husband and I just returned from an epic USA road trip and listened to this cd on repeat through Wyomming, Colorado and Utah. I re-created Cleopatra’s story in my head many times before seeing this video and it did not dissapoint. We saw you on a Vancouver, B.C. rainy night and can’t wait to see you again. Thank you.

I loved this song when I first heard it, and then when I heard what inspired it I was absolutely floored! I was floored because I used to live in the Republic of Georgia. I lived there for 3 years, in fact, as an English teacher in the public school system. I am very well acquainted with the Georgian view of life and loss. I’m also kinda floored because I never, ever encountered a female taxi driver in that country. Was this in Tbilisi? I’m interested to know what Wesley was doing in Georgia, too. It’s not a place where many Americans go. It’s a unique culture, to say the least.

    Hi y’all,

That song and that video really made me reflect on my own journey through life. Thank you for that, Not every day you’re forced to reflect when hearing a song.

BTW, when can we expect you to turn up in the Far East? We yearned for great music.. we’ve suffered enough K-Pop!

What an amazing song and video. I can’t remember the last time a song came along that hit such an emotional nerve. It’s 85 degrees in my apartment and I got goosebumps listening to it. Thank you.

  22. Dana

Great song! Video brought tears to my eyes.

  23. Stephen Dolan

A wonderful sad and noble song. The video almost broke my heart. The woman in it is astounding in the nuance she exhibits. I think I have seen her before, but I don’t know where. Can you tell me who she is? Thank you for the song and video and her name (if you can give it to me).

I have to do a rhetorical analysis on a music video and write a paper on it, and I chose to do it on the Cleopatra music video because it is such a thoughtful and thought-provoking work. I have watched it multiple times and continue to find new details to take notes on each time. I realized (and I may be picking up on something that isn’t there) but do a majority of the women have the same scar on their left cheek? If so, what is the meaning behind this?
Can’t wait to see yall in concert soon!!

  25. Francis Whitford

Who was the actor that played the taxi driver? She looked a lot like Colleen Dewhurst>
    Peace,

Such a beautiful song. I cried but didn’t know why, but now I know why… who’s the son in the video? I’m gonna marry him.

  27. Roberto
